If you’re coming to Milford Sound in May you can combine a Milford Sound cruise with an independent day walk on the Milford Track, making it the first time visitors can enjoy a day hike on the world-famous track and cruise the fiord in a one day package.
We have teamed up with our friends at Fiordland Outdoors Co. to give you the chance to explore Milford Sound by boat and by foot in one day. Start your day at Deepwater Basin in Milford Sound and catch the 8.30am water taxi to Sandfly Point. This is usually the finish point of this, five-day hike but this is where your adventure will start. From here you walk a spectacular section of the Milford Track through lush native forest to Giant Gate Falls.
It’s about 5km to Giant Gate Falls so you have plenty of time to stop along the way and take in some of the incredible photo opportunities. Just over the swing bridge at Giant Gate Falls is some shelter and a great spot to enjoy your lunch before retracing your steps back to Sandfly Point.
The water taxi will pick you up from Sandfly Point for the quick journey back to Deepwater Basin. You’ve explored Milford by foot and now it’s time to explore the 8th Wonder of the World by boat. Depending on your timeframe, and what time you get back from your walk you can choose either our Milford Sound Nature Cruise or our Milford Sound Discover More Cruise.
Cruise the length of the fiord, out to the Tasman sea and back, stopping at Fairy Falls, Stirling Falls and other points of interest. Our friendly team will provide you with entertaining commentary and our skipper is happy to answer any questions from the open wheelhouse. If you choose our Discover More Cruise you will stop at the Milford Sound Underwater Observatory and descent 10 metres (64 steps) beneath the water’s surface to check out life under the fiord. This viewing chamber has 360-dregree views out large windows where you can see local marine life including rare black coral.
You’ll spend up to an hour at the Milford Sound Underwater Observatory and our expert guides will provide commentary on the history and geology of Milford Sound. Your cruise also includes a delicious picnic lunch. Your boat will then take you back to the Milford wharf after a day of epic exploration of the 8th Wonder of the World.
