Queenstown / Wine Tour

Waitiri Creek

Introduction

Waitiri Creek is one of Gibbston Valley’s longest-established wineries and has been part of the Central Otago wine scene since the early 1990s. It’s an easy winery to enjoy; relaxed, approachable, and well set up for tasting as part of a Queenstown Wine Tour.

The cellar door is set in a historic woolshed, full of character and far from formal. From here, you can take in vineyard views while settling into a friendly, informative tasting, whether you’re new to wine or already know what you enjoy.

When you visit with Southern Discoveries, Waitiri Creek offers a hosted tasting focused on wines grown in Gibbston’s cooler conditions. Pinot Noir is a highlight, alongside crisp whites and rosé, with the cellar door team sharing clear, easy-to-follow insights as you taste.

Many guests find Waitiri Creek an enjoyable and straightforward part of the day — good wines, local knowledge, and plenty of time to relax and enjoy the experience. It’s a winery that fits naturally into a small-group wine tour, without feeling rushed or overly polished.

The History

Waitiri Creek was founded in 1993 by Alistair Ward, Paula Ramage and the Ward family, making it one of Gibbston’s pioneering wineries. At a time when Central Otago wine was still gaining momentum, Waitiri Creek helped shape the region’s early identity with its hands-on approach and small-scale production.

The Ward family has deep roots in the area, dating back generations, and that sense of connection to the land and community remains central to the winery today. The original Shanagolden vineyard was planted in 1994, chosen for its northerly aspect and free-draining soils — conditions well-suited to cool-climate viticulture.

Over the years, Waitiri Creek has expanded carefully, always keeping sustainability and site expression at the forefront. The winery is fully family-owned and remains actively involved in vineyard management, harvest and winemaking decisions.

The cellar door itself has evolved too. Once located in a historic church, it is now based in a character-filled woolshed as part of the Gibbston Fine Beverage Co. This heritage setting reflects where Waitiri Creek has come from and how it continues to adapt, while staying grounded in the values that shaped it from the beginning.

The Wines

Waitiri Creek is best known for its Pinot Noir, crafted in the classic Gibbston style with an emphasis on freshness, structure and balance. The winery produces both premium and more approachable expressions, including the well-loved Drummer label, keeping the range accessible without losing regional character.

Alongside Pinot Noir, Waitiri Creek offers a diverse portfolio of cool-climate wines. Visitors may find Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Rosé on the tasting list, each reflecting careful vineyard matching and thoughtful winemaking.

One defining aspect of Waitiri Creek’s approach is its attention to viticulture. Lower vineyard altitude and a northerly aspect mean fruit often ripens earlier than elsewhere in the region, helping preserve aromatics and freshness across the range.

Recognised at domestic and international wine competitions since the late 1990s, Waitiri Creek has built a reputation for consistency rather than flash. On a Queenstown wine tour, a tasting here offers a clear, enjoyable snapshot of what Gibbston Valley does best — wines that are expressive, food-friendly and shaped by place.

The Vineyards

Waitiri Creek’s vineyards lie within Gibbston, one of Central Otago’s coolest and most distinctive sub-regions. Planted at lower altitudes with a northerly aspect, the vines benefit from long daylight hours and cool nights, helping preserve natural acidity and flavour clarity in the fruit.

From the outset, vineyard layout and variety selection have been guided by careful site assessment. Terroir mapping has been used to match grape varieties to specific growing conditions, ensuring each block performs at its best. All vines are hand-pruned and hand-harvested, reinforcing a hands-on approach that prioritises quality.

Sustainability is central to vineyard practice at Waitiri Creek. Thoughtful management of soils, water and vine health supports long-term resilience and consistency across vintages.

These vineyard choices show clearly in the glass. Whether tasting Pinot Noir or aromatic whites, visitors experience wines that reflect Gibbston Valley’s cooler climate — elegant, vibrant and shaped by a close relationship between land, season and people.
