Brennan Wines

Introduction

Brennan Wines is a family-owned winery tucked along the Gibbston Back Road, surrounded by some of the oldest vineyard plantings in the valley.

This is a winery where everything starts and finishes on site. The vines you see outside the cellar door are the same ones that shape what’s poured in the glass, giving each wine a strong sense of continuity from vineyard to bottle.

When you arrive at Brennan Wines on your Southern Discoveries Wine Tour, you will discover a relaxed and friendly setting. You may even be welcomed by one of Brennan’s resident winery dogs.

When it comes to wine tasting, Brennan offers both classic Central Otago styles and a few unexpected surprises. The winery is known for pushing the boundaries of what is typically grown in the region.

At Brennan Wines, a wine tasting is focused is on authentic, honest wines, made in small batches, shared in a welcoming cellar door where curiosity is encouraged.

The History

The Brennan family has deep roots in Gibbston Valley. The land was first purchased in 1994, making it one of the earlier vineyard sites in the area, at a time when Central Otago wine was still finding its feet.

Brennan Wines released its first vintage in 2006, produced by owner and winemaker Sean Brennan. From the beginning, the approach was deliberately hands-on. Rather than expanding quickly, the focus stayed firmly on small-scale, estate-grown production, allowing close attention to every stage of the process.

Family ownership remains at the heart of Brennan Wines today. The entire operation is run with a strong sense of independence, from vineyard management through to winemaking and the cellar door experience. Each release reflects both the season and the decisions made along the way, rather than a fixed “house style”.

Over the years, Brennan Wines has become known not only for its Pinot Noir, but also for its experimentation with varietals rarely seen in Central Otago, such as Tempranillo, Zinfandel and Muscat. It’s this balance of tradition and experimentation that has earned the winery a loyal following, both locally and further afield.

A Brennan Wines wine tasting gives you more than wines it offers insight into the story of one family carving its own path within the Gibbston Valley wine story.

The Wines

Brennan Wines produces Pinot Noir that captures the distinct character that Gibbston Valley is known for. Produced in small quantities from estate-grown fruit, the Pinot Noirs reflect seasonal variation, site expression, and an approach to winemaking that lets the vineyard speak clearly.

Alongside Pinot Noir, Brennan Wines has built a reputation for offering something a little unexpected. The range includes aromatic whites and alternative varietals that are rarely seen in Central Otago, all made with the same attention to balance and drinkability. One standout is the Brennan Trio, a distinctive white blend that showcases the winery’s experimental side.

Brennan’s unique varietals also include wines such as Tempranillo and Zinfandel. These wines are part of what makes a wine tasting here memorable, giving you the chance to taste something unexpected.

Because production is small and releases change with each vintage, the best way to understand Brennan Wines is to visit the cellar door. On our Queenstown wine tour, this stop often surprises guests because the wines will leave you talking long after your visit is over.

The Vineyards

Brennan Wines produces wines from a single, 13-hectare estate vineyard located along the Gibbston Back Road. The vineyard sits within one of Central Otago’s cooler sub-regions, where slow ripening helps preserve freshness, structure, and detail in the wines.

Gibbston Valley’s climate and soils play a major role here. Cooler nights, free-draining soils, and marked seasonal shifts all contribute to wines that offer elegant flavours. Rather than blending fruit from across the region, Brennan Wines works from its own vineyard, allowing each block’s character to show year after year.

This focused approach gives the winery full control at every stage, from vineyard decisions through to harvest timing and final blending. It also reinforces the connection between place and bottle, something that becomes clear when tasting the Brennan Wines range.
