About

What wildlife might I see?

Milford Sound is home to fur seals, bottlenose dolphins, and Fiordland crested penguins. Sightings depend on the day and are not guaranteed, but your Nature Guide knows where to look.

What is the Discover More Cruise?

Southern Discoveries' longest Milford Sound cruise, spending up to two hours 15 minutes on the water. A dedicated Nature Guide shares commentary on the fiord's wildlife, geology and history throughout, and a picnic lunch is included.

How is the helicopter different from the fixed-wing flight?

Altitude and intimacy. The helicopter flies lower and moves with the terrain, along ridgelines, through passes and includes an alpine landing while the fixed-wing option gives wider panoramas from higher up. Same mountains, two very different seats.

How long is the helicopter flight?

As a guide, the direct air route between Milford Sound and Queenstown takes 35 - 45 mins, compared with around four and a half hours by road.

Does the helicopter land during the flight?

Yes the helicopter flight includes a remote alpine landing. This is chosen by the pilot and is subject to weather conditions.

What will I see from the helicopter?

Fiordland from inside it: rock walls at window height, hanging valleys, glacier ice, and country that has never had a road. The final descent over Lake Wakatipu into Queenstown is a highlight of its own.
