Queenstown in winter has a special feel. Snow-dusted mountains, crisp alpine air and a town that really comes alive when temperatures drop. Whether you’re chasing fresh tracks on the slopes, warming up with a glass of pinot noir, or exploring the scenery around the lake, a winter trip to Queenstown delivers great experiences at every turn.
Here’s our guide to making the most of Queenstown in winter.
Hit the slopes at world-class ski fields
Queenstown is the gateway to some of New Zealand’s best skiing and snowboarding. Three excellent ski fields sit within easy reach of town, and each offers something a little different.
Coronet Peak is the closest, just 25 minutes’ drive from town, and a favourite with locals and visitors. It’s known for reliable snow, wide groomed trails and a fun night skiing programme. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned rider, the conditions and views across the Wakatipu Basin are hard to beat.
A bit further afield, Cardrona Alpine Resort is a family favourite with wide-open terrain parks, dedicated learner areas and reliable snow. It sits between Queenstown and Wanaka, which makes it a great option for a full day on the mountain.
For steeper, more challenging terrain, Treble Cone is the pick. Located near Wanaka, it has the longest vertical rise in the South Island and rewards confident skiers and snowboarders with sweeping views of Lake Wanaka and Mount Aspiring. The uncrowded runs and off-piste opportunities make it a gem.
Explore Queenstown’s winter scenery
You don’t need to ski to enjoy Queenstown in winter. The town and the country around it look great from ground level too.
Take a stroll through Queenstown Gardens, a quiet green space right on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. In winter, the gardens are beautifully still, with frost on the lawns and views of The Remarkables under snow. It’s a lovely spot for a morning walk or a slow afternoon wander.
For something more adventurous, take a drive along the lake towards Glenorchy. The winter light in this part of the world is something else, soft and golden, and perfect for photos.
Warm up with food, wine and local experiences
The food and wine scene really shines in the cooler months. Cosy restaurants, open fires and Central Otago’s pinot noir make a great combination for a winter evening.
If you’d like to get out among the vineyards, our Queenstown Wine Tour is a brilliant way to spend a day. You’ll visit boutique wineries across Gibbston Valley, one of the world’s southernmost wine regions, and taste excellent wines while soaking in the mountain scenery. It’s relaxed, social and a nice change of pace from the slopes.
Take a day trip to Milford Sound
One of our favourite things to do from Queenstown in winter is a day trip to Milford Sound. The drive through Fiordland is good year-round, but in winter it takes on a different character: snow-topped peaks, frozen edges to the waterfalls and a stillness that makes the fiord feel especially quiet.
Our Coach & Cruise package takes care of everything, with a scenic coach run from Queenstown followed by a cruise through the fiord. You’ll glide past tall cliffs, cascading waterfalls and old rainforest, with the chance to spot seals, dolphins and penguins along the way. In winter, you’ll often have fewer crowds, which makes for a more intimate trip on the water.
If you’d prefer a faster journey in, our Scenic Flight & Cruise is a great option. Fly over the mountains and land in Milford Sound for your cruise. It’s a memorable way to see Fiordland from above.

Tips for visiting Queenstown in winter
Pack warm layers. Queenstown temperatures can range from around -2°C to 10°C in winter, and conditions can change quickly at altitude. A good down jacket, thermals, gloves and a beanie are essentials.
Book your accommodation and ski passes early. Winter is peak season for the ski fields, and popular accommodation fills up fast, especially through the school holidays.
Drive with care. Roads around Queenstown can be icy in the early mornings, and the road to Milford Sound may require chains. If you’d rather leave the driving to someone else, a guided coach tour is a stress-free option.
Don’t skip the non-ski activities. From wine tours and scenic cruises to a day trip to Milford Sound, there’s plenty to enjoy beyond the slopes. Winter in Queenstown offers far more than skiing.
Make the most of your winter trip
Queenstown in winter rewards those who embrace the cold. Three excellent ski fields at Coronet Peak, Cardrona Alpine Resort and Treble Cone, beautiful scenery, great food and wine, and day trips to places like Milford Sound make it one of the best winter destinations in New Zealand.
Whether you’re skiing fresh powder, sipping pinot by a fire or cruising through a quiet fiord, a winter visit will leave you with memories to keep.
