Visiting Milford Sound is likely to be one of your most memorable moments in New Zealand. The stunning landscapes, towering mountains, giant waterfalls and of course the famous reflections off the fiord are just some reasons Milford Sound is so picturesque. So why not stay overnight for sunset? It’s truly a magical experience that you won’t forget.
If you are staying overnight in Milford Sound here is everything you need to know about experiencing that magical Milford Sound sunset.
Where to watch the sunset
There are a few different places to watch the Milford Sound sunset but the easiest place is only a 2-minute walk from the Milford visitor terminal. After going on an amazing boat cruise you can simply venture out of the terminal and take the short walk to the Breakwater Walkway. Once there, you have some of the best views on offer of Milford Sound!
You can also walk a little further and head to the main car park. From here you can also venture onto the sand as the tide moves out and search for your own vantage point.
If you are feeling adventurous, it is possible to hike the Milford Viewpoint and watch the sun go down from there. This walk takes about 10 minutes each way and is signposted. Make sure to bring a flashlight for the way back down though!
Enjoy a quiet evening at Milford Sound
If you stay until sunset you will get to experience the peace and quiet of Milford Sound. Fewer people stay into the evening and it is likely that you will almost have the view of the sunset all to yourself! You might just see a few of the workers who live there wandering around. The tranquillity of Milford Sound as the sun goes down is magical!
If you book the last boat cruise of the day then you will not have long to wait before you can enjoy the beautiful sunset!
Once the sun goes down it isn’t time to leave quite yet though. On a clear night, the stars put on a show of their own! Whether photography is a hobby or you just haven’t seen the Milky Way shine so bright, a night under the stars at Milford is well worth it!
Where to stay the night in Milford Sound
If you plan on staying in Milford Sound until it gets dark then the best place to stay is the Milford Sound Lodge.
Milford Lodge is only a few minutes from the main car park at Milford Sound. It has accommodation for every budget, from campsites to luxury cabins. Make sure to book in advance as it can book up quickly especially in the summer months.
Staying at Milford Lodge will allow you to get the most out of Milford Sound, the day, the sunset, and the stars. If you are an early riser you might even catch the sunrise the following day!
Staying overnight at the Milford Lodge would also allow you more time the following day to explore the fiord. Jump on our early morning Encounter Nature Cruise and enjoy exploring the fiord on a small boat with fewer passengers. Our experienced nature guides will provide entertaining commentary and the skipper will get you so close to waterfalls. For the ultimate experience add an early morning kayak around Harrison Cove and a visit to the Milford Sound Underwater Observatory. The more time you spend in Milford, the more you are sure to enjoy it!
