Ben Lomond: The Ultimate Queenstown Day Hike

Published 20th September 2026

Few Queenstown hikes reward you like Ben Lomond. From the 1,438m summit, Lake Wakatipu sprawls below, the Remarkables sit to the east, and on a clear day you can pick out Mt Aspiring and the edge of Fiordland on the horizon. It’s the big day hike straight out of town, no car required if you take the gondola.

Here’s what you need to know before tackling the Ben Lomond track, including the saddle-only option if the full summit feels like too much.

Ben Lomond Queenstown: getting to the trailhead

There are two ways to start the Ben Lomond Queenstown hike. The first is from the bottom of the Skyline Gondola in town, walking up the Tiki Trail (about an hour of zigzags through Douglas fir forest). The second, and most popular, is to take the gondola to the top station at Bob’s Peak and start the hike from there, saving yourself roughly 450m of climb.

Both are valid. The gondola option makes the hike a manageable day. Walking up via the Tiki Trail turns it into a proper full-day mission with over 1,400m of cumulative climb.

The Ben Lomond track: route overview

From the top of the gondola, the Ben Lomond track contours through beech forest before breaking out onto open tussock tops. The first major milestone is Ben Lomond Saddle at 1,326m, a broad col with sweeping views and a natural turn-around point for less confident hikers.

From the saddle, the final push to the summit climbs another 112 vertical metres up a steep, loose ridge with some light scrambling. It’s not technical, but it is exposed, and the track narrows significantly. Total distance from the gondola top station is around 11km return.

Ben Lomond Saddle: the shorter option

If the summit push looks too steep, or the weather is turning, Ben Lomond Saddle is a genuinely excellent destination in its own right. The views from the saddle take in Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables and the upper Shotover, and you’re spared the loose, exposed final ridge.

Allow about four to five hours return to the saddle from the gondola top, versus six to eight hours return for the full summit. Plenty of hikers make the call at the saddle based on how they’re feeling and what the weather is doing.

Timing and difficulty

Ben Lomond is rated Advanced by the Department of Conservation (DOC) and it earns that grade honestly. Plan on six to eight hours return from the gondola top for the full summit, or four to five hours to the saddle and back. The final summit ridge is the crux: loose rock, real exposure, and in bad weather (wind, sleet, low cloud) it’s a sensible place to turn around.

Start early. Afternoon weather in the Wakatipu basin can turn quickly, and you want to be off the summit ridge before any incoming front.

Weather and gear

Summer weather on Ben Lomond can be glorious, but the summit is fully alpine. Snow and ice are possible into November and can return as early as April. Check the MetService Queenstown forecast and factor in wind. Gusts on the summit ridge can be double what you feel in town.

Gear for a summer Ben Lomond hike: sturdy trail shoes or light boots, two-plus litres of water, warm layer, wind/rain shell, sunscreen, sunhat, gloves for the summit, and snacks. In winter, this is a mountaineering objective, crampons, ice axe and the skills to use them, or choose another hike.

After the hike: recovery in Queenstown

You’ll have earned a big feed and a cold drink. Queenstown has no shortage of either. For a gentler second day, plenty of our guests pair the Ben Lomond hike with a Milford Sound day trip from Queenstown, a proper way to let the legs recover while still making the most of the region.

Final thoughts on Ben Lomond

Ben Lomond is the big day hike that defines Queenstown for a lot of visitors. It’s accessible (straight from town via gondola), scenically hard to beat, and just challenging enough to feel like a real summit. Whether you stop at the saddle or push to the top, it’s one of the best things you can do with a clear weather day in the Wakatipu.

Ready to swap the boots for a deck

After a big day on Ben Lomond, we’d love to show you Milford Sound from sea level. Our coach and cruise from Queenstown picks you up early, drives the Milford Road for you, and gets you onto the water for a cruise through the fiord. The perfect rest-day reward.
