Queenstown is famous for its mountains, its lake and its adrenaline, but ask any local where to spend an afternoon and the answer often points east, towards the vineyards. Within 30 minutes of the town centre you’ll find one of New Zealand’s most celebrated wine regions, home to cellar doors pouring world-class pinot noir beneath dramatic schist bluffs.

Where Queenstown’s wineries actually are
Technically, no winery sits within Queenstown itself. The cellar doors people mean when they say “winery Queenstown” are in the surrounding sub-regions of Central Otago, a short drive from the town centre. The main clusters are:
- Gibbston Valley, 25 minutes from Queenstown, the closest and most-visited wine area. Often called the “Valley of Vines”.
- Arrowtown and the Kawarau Gorge, a few boutique wineries tucked into this historic gold-mining area.
- Cromwell, Bannockburn and Lowburn, around an hour’s drive, home to some of the region’s most prestigious producers.
For a first-time visitor, Gibbston Valley wineries are the logical starting point. They’re close, they’re scenic, and they offer an excellent cross-section of Central Otago styles.
Gibbston Valley wineries worth visiting
Gibbston sits at altitude, with cooler temperatures that produce elegant, perfumed pinot noir. Standouts include:
- Gibbston Valley Winery, the region’s original commercial vineyard, with a famous wine cave carved into the hillside.
- Peregrine, architecturally striking, with a winged roof inspired by the native falcon.
- Kinross, a cellar door collective pouring wines from several small Gibbston producers under one roof.
- Brennan Wines, a smaller, family-run cellar door known for beautifully crafted pinot noir.
- Waitiri Creek, set in a restored 1864 church, one of the most charming tasting rooms in the valley.
Each has its own personality, and tasting across two or three in a day gives you a real sense of how much variation one small valley can produce.
Arrowtown wineries
Arrowtown itself is a gold-rush village with heritage cottages and autumn colour that draws photographers from around the world. The wineries nearby tend to be small, boutique and often family-owned. Visiting a cellar door here is a quieter, more intimate experience, and pairs beautifully with a wander through Arrowtown’s historic main street.
What to expect at a Queenstown winery visit
Most cellar doors offer a seated or standing tasting of four to six wines for a modest fee, often waived with a purchase. Expect to taste pinot noir as the hero, usually alongside pinot gris, riesling, and sometimes chardonnay or a rosé.
Many wineries also have on-site restaurants or cafés, making it easy to turn a tasting into a long lunch. Gibbston Valley Winery’s restaurant and Kinross’s bistro are both locally loved.
Self-drive or guided wine tour?
You can certainly self-drive between wineries Queenstown-side, but there’s a catch: someone has to stay sober. Drink-driving limits in New Zealand are strict, and even one generous tasting pour can put you over.
