Te Anau to Milford Sound: Planning Your Day Trip

The drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound is one of the most scenic road journeys in New Zealand, and a Milford Sound cruise at the end of it makes for a great day out. Whether you’re self-driving or joining a guided tour with us, this guide covers everything you need to plan it.

How far is Te Anau to Milford Sound?

The drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound is around 120km and takes about two hours each way. But this is not a road you want to rush. State Highway 94, known as the Milford Road, is one of the most scenic drives in the country. It winds through ancient beech forest, past mirror-still lakes and through the dramatic Homer Tunnel before dropping down into the Cleddau Valley.

Allow at least 2.5 hours each way so you can stop at the viewpoints and short walks along the route. In winter, be ready for possible road closures due to avalanche risk. Always check conditions before you head off.

Must-see stops along the Milford Road

There are plenty of reasons to pull over on the drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound:

– Mirror Lakes: a short boardwalk leads to these calm lakes that reflect the surrounding mountains like glass. Best on a still morning.

– The Avenue of the Disappearing Mountain: a quirky optical illusion where the mountain ahead appears to shrink as you drive towards it.

– Lake Gunn Nature Walk: a gentle 45-minute loop through mossy beech forest, right beside the highway. A lovely stretch of the legs.

– The Chasm: a short walk to see the Cleddau River carving smooth, swirling rock formations.

– Pop’s View and Monkey Creek: both offer big mountain views and are perfect for photos.

Choosing your Milford Sound cruise

A Milford Sound cruise is the highlight of most visitors’ Fiordland experience, and it’s easy to see why. Cruising beneath tall cliffs, past cascading waterfalls and alongside wildlife like fur seals, bottlenose dolphins and Fiordland crested penguins is something special.

We offer several cruise options to suit different interests and time frames.

Our Nature Cruise is a relaxed, fully guided experience that takes you the length of the fiord and back. You’ll get close to waterfalls, wildlife and the sheer rock faces that make Milford Sound so dramatic. It’s perfect if you want to soak up the scenery at a comfortable pace.

For something deeper, our Discover More Cruise includes everything on the Nature Cruise plus a visit to our Milford Sound Underwater Observatory. You’ll descend 10 metres below the surface to see the unique marine life that thrives in the fiord, where a freshwater layer on top lets deep-water species live at unusually shallow depths. Black coral, sea stars and several fish species are right there in front of you.

If you’d rather not drive the Milford Road yourself, our Coach & Cruise picks you up in Te Anau (or Queenstown) and takes care of the transport, so you can relax and enjoy the scenery from the comfort of your seat. For those short on time or wanting a really spectacular arrival, our Scenic Flight & Cruise flies you in over the mountains before your cruise.

A Captain’s VIP Lounge upgrade is also available for guests who’d like a quieter spot on board, with exclusive lounge access, canapés and drinks.

What about the Milford Track?

The Milford Track is one of New Zealand’s most famous Great Walks, a 53.5km four-day trek through some of the most beautiful country in Fiordland. The track starts at the head of Lake Te Anau and finishes at Sandfly Point in Milford Sound, which makes it a natural companion to a Milford Sound cruise.

If you’re not tackling the full multi-day hike, you can still get a taste of the Milford Track on a guided walk through Fiordland rainforest. Our Coach, Cruise & Walk package combines a cruise on Milford Sound with a guided bush walk, giving you the best of both worlds without needing to carry a pack for four days.

Glowworms in Te Anau

Before or after your Milford Sound day trip, make time for our Te Anau Glowworm Caves. A short boat ride across Lake Te Anau brings you to the caves, where thousands of tiny glowworms light up the underground darkness like a night sky. It’s completely different from anything else in the area, and a lovely way to spend an evening in Te Anau.

The glowworms here are Arachnocampa luminosa, a species found only in New Zealand. The cave system itself is a geological wonder still being shaped by the rushing water inside.

Tips for your day trip

Start early. Leaving Te Anau by 8am gives you plenty of time to enjoy the stops along the way and catch a mid-morning or midday cruise.

Pack warm layers and a rain jacket. Milford Sound gets around 182 rainy days a year, and the weather can change quickly. Rainy days are actually some of the best for cruising, as hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear on the cliffs.

Bring snacks and water. Food options along the Milford Road and at Milford Sound itself are limited.

Fill up your fuel tank in Te Anau. There are no petrol stations between Te Anau and Milford Sound.

Book your Milford Sound cruise in advance, especially through the busy summer months (November to March).

The journey from Te Anau to Milford Sound is one of those drives that deserves to be taken slowly. Pair it with a cruise on the fiord and you’ve got one of the best day trips in the country.

Ready to plan your day on the water?

We’d love to show you Milford Sound. Our Coach & Cruise takes the driving off your plate, gets you out on the fiord in front of waterfalls and wildlife, and brings you back to Te Anau or Queenstown with a camera full of photos. We promise you won’t miss a thing.
