Everything you need to know about visiting Milford Sound in winter—from driving conditions and what to wear to waterfalls and wildlife.

Can you visit Milford Sound in winter? Yes! Is there anything to be aware of? Also yes!

The good news is that Milford Sound is open year-round, with both Milford Sound itself and the Milford road remaining accessible throughout winter, weather conditions permitting. While occasional road closures can occur due to snow, ice or avalanche risk, these events are usually short-lived and well communicated.

Winter weather in Milford Sound

While the region is renowned as one of the wettest places on Earth (with an impressive 200+ days of rainfall annually), winter often delivers some of the most spectacular weather conditions. Most of Milford Sound’s famous rainfall occurs between October and March, making winter a prime time for clear, stable weather. This means winter often delivers ideal conditions for postcard-perfect views of snow-capped peaks and crisp blue skies. Between June and August, temperatures hover between 5-10°C (41-50°F). But don’t worry, you will see waterfalls on the fiord at any time of year, with rainy days giving them an impressive top-up.

What to wear

Snow-capped Mitre Peak in Milford Sound

Fiordland is known for its changeable weather, so our best tip for what to wear is to be prepared for everything. Pack warm layers—a good windbreaker and thermal clothing will ensure you’re nice and warm when out on the viewing decks and comfortable when inside the warm boat or coach. A good quality raincoat is an absolute essential item for visiting Milford Sound any time of year.

Hot tip: If you need to warm up, you can always grab a tea, coffee or hot chocolate onboard any of our Milford Sound cruises.

Milford Sound activities in winter

You will find most activities in Milford Sound stay open throughout the year, including scenic cruises on the fiord. Short walks are possible as long as you are prepared for the weather. The Milford Track is closed to the general public as a Great Walk from May to late October due to winter conditions. While it remains open for experienced backcountry hikers, it’s crucial to note that the track is not maintained to the same standard as during the Great Walks season. Winter weather in Fiordland National Park can bring extreme cold, ice, snow, and avalanche risk, so only head off the main trails if you have backcountry experience.

Hot tip: Winter in Milford Sound creates perfect conditions for those once-in-a-lifetime holiday snaps. The combination of snow-capped peaks and crisp winter light creates opportunities for truly spectacular photography. You can take a sneak peek before you arrive on the Milford Sound webcams.

Driving to Milford Sound in Winter

The road to Milford Sound in winter.

While it is possible to drive to Milford Sound in winter, it’s not always advisable. Our advice is to leave it to the experts and take the coach.
From May to September, the road to Milford Sound (State Highway 94) can be challenging due to snow, ice, and the risk of avalanches. Freezing temperatures often cause icy patches, especially early in the morning, in shaded areas and at higher elevations such as the divide near the Homer Tunnel.

The section between the Hollyford Road junction and The Chasm is a restricted no-stopping zone in winter due to avalanche danger. The road is closely monitored, and avalanche control measures are undertaken to keep everyone safe. If the risk is too high, the road will be closed for everyone’s safety.

If you plan to self-drive to Milford Sound in winter, it’s a good idea to check the Milford Sound road conditions before leaving.

The rare Fiordland crested penguin

While it may be chilly for us, the local Fiordland wildlife isn’t worried about colder temperatures. July to November is breeding season for the Fiordland crested penguin, meaning you have a good chance to spot these rare creatures on the rocks in the fiord. Seals inhabit Milford Sound year-round and love to bask in the sun during winter’s clear, sunny days. Dolphins often come to visit our boats at any time of year.
