Milford Sound is one of those places that quietly stops you in your tracks. Tall cliffs draped in rainforest, waterfalls tumbling hundreds of metres into dark waters, and around every corner the chance to spot some of New Zealand’s most special wildlife. For many of our guests, it’s the dolphins and penguins in Milford Sound that steal the show.
A Milford Sound cruise is the best way to see these animals in their natural home. Whether it’s a pod of bottlenose dolphins riding the bow wave or a rare Fiordland crested penguin perched on a rocky shore, every cruise brings the chance of a special encounter.
Bottlenose dolphins, stars of the fiord
Milford Sound dolphins are one of the most exciting sights you’ll see on the water. Bottlenose dolphins are the species most commonly spotted here, and they’re wonderfully curious. They often swim right up to cruise vessels, surfing the bow wave and putting on a show that has passengers reaching for their cameras.
These dolphins can grow up to three metres long and travel in pods of varying sizes. Some days you’ll see a small group of four or five gliding through the fiord. Other days, a larger pod might appear, leaping and playing alongside the boat. Dolphins are wild animals, so sightings are never a sure thing, but they are genuinely common in Milford Sound, and our skippers know the best spots to look.
Spotting dolphins from the open decks of our Nature Cruise or Discover More Cruise is something special. The calm, sheltered waters of the fiord mean the boat stays steady, giving you a clear vantage point to watch these playful marine mammals up close.

Fiordland crested penguins, the rare tawaki
If dolphins are the stars, then Fiordland crested penguins are the hidden gems. Known by their Māori name, tawaki, these penguins are one of the rarest penguin species in the world. They nest in the dense coastal rainforest around Milford Sound, and catching a glimpse of one is a genuinely special moment.
Tawaki are shy birds. They tend to nest in secluded spots among tree roots and rock crevices, and they’re most often seen between July and November during the breeding season. Outside of that window, sightings are less frequent, but our experienced skippers and nature guides always keep a sharp eye on the shoreline.
We’re a proud supporter of the Tawaki Project, a conservation initiative dedicated to studying and protecting Fiordland crested penguins. By joining one of our cruises, you’re helping support the ongoing research and conservation that gives these rare birds the best chance of thriving.
Little blue penguins, small but mighty
Tawaki aren’t the only penguins in Milford Sound. The little blue penguin, the world’s smallest penguin species, also calls these waters home. Standing just 25 centimetres tall, these tiny birds are very cute. They’re more commonly seen bobbing on the surface or darting beneath the waves as they hunt for fish.
Little blue penguins tend to be most active around dawn and dusk, but daytime sightings do happen, especially in the sheltered bays along the fiord. Keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready.
Fur seals, sunbathers of Seal Rock
No Milford Sound wildlife trip is complete without the New Zealand fur seals. These characters are a common sight, lounging on rocks at the base of the cliffs and soaking up whatever sunshine breaks through the clouds. You’ll often spot them sprawled out in groups, occasionally slipping into the water for a swim before hauling themselves back onto their favourite rocks.
Both our Nature Cruise and Discover More Cruise pass close to the seal colonies, giving you great photo opportunities. Fur seals are present year-round, which makes them one of the most reliable wildlife sightings in the fiord.
The best way to experience Milford Sound wildlife
A Milford Sound cruise with us puts you right in the heart of the action. Our Nature Cruise takes you the full length of the fiord and back, passing waterfalls, tall peaks and all the best wildlife hotspots. If you’re after a quieter experience, our Discover More Cruise uses a smaller vessel and gets you even closer to the action.
Both cruises feature open viewing decks, which are essential for wildlife spotting, and skippers who share fascinating stories about the fiord’s ecology and history. For something a bit more premium, you can upgrade to our Captain’s VIP Lounge for the best views on board.
Getting to Milford Sound is part of the adventure too. We offer Coach & Cruise packages from Queenstown and Te Anau aboard glass-roof premium coaches, as well as Scenic Flight & Cruise combos for a great aerial perspective. However you choose to arrive, the wildlife waiting in the fiord will make the journey worth it.
There’s nothing quite like watching dolphins leap through the waters of Milford Sound, spotting a rare tawaki on the shoreline, or locking eyes with a fur seal basking on the rocks. It’s wild, it’s real, and it’s waiting for you.
