The ultimate overnight experience in Milford Sound

More articles about:
Milford Road trip

If you’re looking to experience all Milford Sound has to offer, then we have the perfect package for you. With our ultimate overnight experience, you will coach, cruise, stay, play and fly in Milford Sound.

Your trip starts in Queenstown where you will depart for Milford Sound on one of our premium coaches. Let our experienced driver do the hard work while you sit back, relax and take in views out of the glass roof. There are plenty of short walks and photo stops along the way so you can take the time to really appreciate the grandeur of Fiordland National Park.

A few of our favourite spots on the Milford Road include:

  • Eglington Valley – This glacier-carved valley is nothing short of dramatic. It is one of the most popular places for taking photos along Milford Road.
  • Mirror Lakes – Small tarns (mountain lakes) on the roadside provide outstanding reflections of the Earl Mountains in calm weather which make for magical photos. The lakes are an easy five-minute stroll along the side of lakes and back up to the main road.
  • Monkey Creek – Here you can drink some of the purest water in the world straight from the source. Keep an eye out for some cheeky Kea too, but remember you can’t feed them
  • The Homer Tunnel – Although it’s not a stop, the Homer Tunnel is definitely one of the coolest parts of the Milford Road. The Homer Tunnel is the only road access to Milford Sound, and before its construction finished in 1954, the only way to Milford Sound was via horseback or walking. The Homer Tunnel is 1.2 kilometres long and passes through solid granite rock – just one of the reasons the tunnel took 19 years to complete

On arrival in Milford your coach driver will check you in for your Milford Sound Nature Cruise. You’ll depart the harbour cruising past Bowen Falls on your right and Mitre Peak ahead of you. The best way to experience the cruise is outside. You’ll get up close to waterfalls, cruise out to the Tasman Sea and spot seals sunning themselves on rocks. Our friendly skipper will provide informative commentary from the open wheelhouse and a delicious picnic lunch is included on your trip.

Don’t forget your rain jacket so you can enjoy a glacial facial under Stirling Falls from the bow of the boat. Legend has it that the water from Stirling Falls can make you look 10 years younger so it’s definitely worth trying!

On arrival back at the wharf you will get picked up by the team from Milford Sound Lodge who will take you to check in for your accommodation for the night. The Milford Sound Lodge is nestled among native bush along the Cleddau River, here you will enjoy a luxury stay right in the heart of this world heritage site. It is an idyllic retreat after a day exploring Milford Sound.

Not included in the package is dinner at Pip Pio Restaurant at the lodge, but we highly recommend it. Serving up delicious locally sourced produce matched with local wine and craft beers, this is a dining experience not to be missed. While the menu can change seasonally, if you see the goats cheese croquettes listed you must try them. Spend the rest of your evening relaxing and enjoying a glass of central Otago wine in your room surrounded by nature and towering mountains.

Wake up feeling rested and enjoy a delicious continental breakfast served in your room. Your flight back to Queenstown doesn’t depart until 3.00pm so you have plenty of time to explore Milford Sound by foot today.

There are plenty of small, short walks In Milford including:

During the summer season from October – May you can add a taste of the world famous Milford Track to your experience. Book with the Lodge, a day walk on the track. After your breakfast, jump on the water taxi in Deepwater Basin which will take you to Sandfly Point. From here it’s a relatively flat 5km walk through lush rainforest to Giant Gate Falls.
