To see Fiordland and Milford Sound/Piopiotahi from a helicopter is a whole new kind of awesome. From above, the mountain ranges open out into the lush southern plains to the east and stretch out to the sea in the west.
Snow-capped peaks glint in the sun, forests carpet the mountainsides and rivers and lakes shimmer through in shades of silver and green.
On a clear day, some of the lakes reflect the ranges in perfect imagery. Turquoise rivers stream into blue-green lakes, and the sounds may be tinted to a golden tea colour by the nutrient-loaded waters feeding into them from the cliffs.
Multiple waterfalls cascade down into raging rivers and the forests below are constantly changing with seasonal colours from green through golds and red, to snow-tipped icescapes.
There are wild deer, pigs and goats living free in the ranges, and a good way to glimpse these shy beasts is from the air as they forage in the bush and plains.
A helicopter ride can take you to the heart of the magic that is Milford Sound/Piopiotahi and the Fiordland National Park.
