The road into Milford is an extraordinary journey through rainforest with ever changing vista's created by glacier carved valleys, tree avalanches and and the dense forests of the World Heritage Park. Allow time to stop and go for a short walk or spend the night at one of the many DOC camping grounds on the way.
On a still day the reflections on the small lakes of the surrounding mountains are spectacular. The lakes are an easy five minute stroll along the side of lakes and back up to the main road.
A good stopping off point with tiolets, interpretation panels, campervan sewage disposal and telephone (card only). Set back in amongst the trees are some great units that can be rented for accommodation.
Completed in 1953, the Homer Tunnel is 945 metres above sea level, 1.2km long and has a sttep gradient down towards Milford. Cheeky Kea's are often seen just before the entrance. Please do not feed them and keep a good hold of your valuables as they like 'shiny' objects!!
A must see on the Milford Road. A 15min loop track takes you through temperate rainforest to view spectacular roch chasms formed by the rushing water in the Cleddau River. The Chasm is at it's roaring best just after or during rainfall.
The Fiordland National park is teaming with wildlife, including curious residents like the kea (nestor notabilis) New Zealand’s notoriously cheeky alpine parrot. On your walks you may also hear Tui and Bellbird along with an abundance of other native birdlife.
There are numerous walking/tramping options within the National Park. For the more advanced tracks please fill in an intentions form at DOC in Te Anau.

Enjoy your trip into Milford! Remember to take your sunscreen, insect repellant, warm clothing and wet weather gear!
