Getting to Milford :
By Campervan

Parking  your campervan overlooking the sea or pitching your tent in a beautiful location is a popular option for people travelling through New Zealand.  If you have time stay for a few days in the Fiordland National Park or at Te Anau and explore the region.

Te Anau to Milford Sound, New Zealand's most picturesque drive is a very worthwhile experience, stop and enjoy the beautiful views and ever changing landscape in the world heritage park.

The Milford Road is an alpine road with many places to stop, explore and take in the views. From May to October winter driving conditions apply and you are required to carry chains. No petrol stations are available past Te Anau, so fill up before you leave. Allow 10 minutes walk from the car park to Milford Wharf. Check in time is 20 minutes before cruise departure.

Weather conditions on the Milford Road are changeable please call into one of our information centres in Queenstown or Te Anau or visit www.milfordroad.co.nz for the latest information.

Places to Stay

Freedom camping is not allowed in the Fiordland National Park, rangers visit the area to check for freedom campers and will move you on.    Te Anau has a great range of holiday parks including the Top Ten Holiday Park on the lakefront and a little further out the Great Views Holiday Park, both have great facilities.

Along the Milford road there are a number of stunning locations designated as Department of Conservation campsites where you can stay for a minimal amount.  The campsites have very basic amenities and are nestled in amongst the forest or beside one of the many lakes and rivers.  For a list of the campsites visit the DOC website.  If you do decide to camp please make sure to leave our environment in a pristine condition for the next people!

In Milford Sound the Milford Sound Lodge has a limited number of powered and non powered sites available for camping.  You will definately need to book ahead during the busy summer months (Oct - March) as they fill up quickly.
